CHANDIGARH: Rajya Sabha Member from Punjab, Satnam Singh Sandhu has emerged as one of the leading parliamentary voices from the state, delivering an all-round performance through his consistent parliamentary engagement, attendance, legislative interventions and sustained advocacy on issues concerning Punjab as well as matters of national importance in the recently concluded Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Even as the session was marred by repeated disruptions, MP Satnam Sandhu recorded an impressive 100 per cent attendance, with his consistent presence and interventions standing well above the national average and leaving an indelible mark on parliamentary functioning. Since his nomination to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India in January 2024, MP Satnam Sandhu has maintained an impressive parliamentary record with 92 per cent attendance including 100 per cent attendance in four Parliamentary sessions which is significantly higher than the national average of 80 per cent.

At the top end, MPs Satnam Singh Sandhu, Ashok Kumar Mittal, Malvinder Singh Kang and Gurjeet Singh Aujla recorded 100% attendance, being present for all 19 sittings. Raghav Chadha followed with 94.73% attendance, while Dr. Amar Singh and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa recorded 89.4% each, reflecting strong participation in parliamentary proceedings. Among Punjab’s Rajya Sabha MPs, Satnam Singh Sandhu stood out not only for his 100 per cent attendance but also for the depth and breadth of his parliamentary engagement.

MP Satnam Sandhu participated in 11 debates and raised 29 questions during the Monsoon Session, actively highlighting issues concerning Punjab while also contributing to debates on matters of national importance. Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu actively participated in the discussion on The Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2026, while extending his support to the legislation during its consideration in the Rajya Sabha.

His interventions consistently brought Punjab-specific concerns to the forefront, spanning agriculture, water security, healthcare, infrastructure, education and connectivity, while also addressing issues of wider national importance.

MP Satnam Sandhu further strengthened his parliamentary engagement through three Special Mentions and three interventions during Question Hour, bringing issues of public importance and matters concerning Punjab and nation to the attention of Parliament. His parliamentary interventions covered a wide range of issues across 28 ministries, reflecting the breadth and diversity of his engagement on matters concerning Punjab as well as national importance.

His active participation through debates, questions, Special Mentions and other parliamentary interventions reflected a sustained effort to ensure that Punjab’s priorities found a strong voice in Parliament.

Since his nomination to the Rajya Sabha in 2024, he has participated in 115 debates, surpassing the national average of 106.5, and raised 225 questions, significantly higher than the national average of 149.45 questions. He has also introduced four Private Members’ Bills, compared to the national average of 0.9 Bills.

One of the most significant stand points of a parliamentarian’s performance is the number of questions asked, as it reflects an MP’s role in ensuring accountability towards the house and raising issues of the public importance; Satnam Singh Sandhu stood out prominently in these categories.

MP Sandhu raised issues on water security and conservation, need for modernization of Punjab’s canal system and rejuvenation of wetland, concerns over rising drug menace in the state, agricultural issues of the state, foodgrains storage scarcity, cooperative sugar mills, building roboust cancer-care infrastructure and international connectivity from Chandigarh.

Speaking about the culture and identity of Punjab, Satnam Singh Sandhu stressed the need for the preservation of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh linked heritage spot at Ropar, invoking the legacy of the Maharaja and his historic Sarkar-e-Khalsa vision of inclusive governance, equitable administration and social harmony.

During the session he spoke on behalf of the young generation seeking guidelines for responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in the schools. MP Sandhu also touched the fundamental issues related to AI such as digital sovereignty, quantum technologies, emerging skills and India’s space programme.

As per the PRS records up to August 13, since Satnam Singh Sandhu entered the parliament in January 2024, he has raised 225 questions, took part in 115 debates and presented four private members’ bills, with an overall attendance of 92%, way ahead of the overall average.

The first-time Rajya Sabha Member has consistently used Parliament as a platform to raise issues relating to farmers, education, the Sikh community, minorities, the Indian diaspora, technology, infrastructure, environment, healthcare, cooperative development and governance reforms. During this period, Sandhu has consistently raised issues of public importance through debates, Question Hour, Special Mentions and other parliamentary interventions. He has brought before Parliament subjects relating to agriculture, groundwater conservation, water management, education, artificial intelligence, judicial reforms, healthcare, rail connectivity, cooperative institutions, tourism, ease of doing business, entrepreneurship, social justice, digital governance, taxation, environmental protection and national infrastructure.

There is no doubt about the fact the interventions emphasize that Punjab was represented through several authoritative voices, however, what differentiates Sandhu in this session is that he scored on all dimensions – attendance, questions, participation and width of the issues he raised.

Earlier during the budget session in March, Sandhu had emerged as a as one of the most active and impactful representatives from the state, as a voice of last man on the ground and a vital link between citizens and the government’s decision making process.

Political experts termed his participation as valid interventions and giving new perspective to the issues. According to them “the issues Sandhu raises in the parliament are well researched, are ponder-able by the dispensation and can be taken to policy table for deeper policy discussions”.

MP Sandhu’s reflects a proactive approach to addressing both national and state-specific concerns and has combined it with consistency and regularity. Touching on the national issues he sought parliament’s attention towards the holistic development of Jammu and Kashmir post the abrogation of article 370.

Speaking on behalf of the people across the country he asked for rationalizing and regulating minimum retail price on medicine across the brands, construction of Shri Ram Darshan railway corridor connecting the important places of pilgrimage in the country and extension of hydrogen powered rail service to Jind-Panipat, Jind-Rohtak and Jind-Hisar routes. He called upon for appreciating India’s historic achievement in the space sector through Skyroot aerospace with the successful launch of Vikram-I.

In addition to his parliamentary interventions, MP Satnam Singh Sandhu has also contributed to the legislative process by introducing four significant Private Members’ Bills covering diverse areas of national importance. These include the Recognition of Legal Person Status of Rivers Bill, 2024, proposing legal personhood for rivers; the Kisan Jeevan Suraksha Evam Durghatna Pratipurti Vidheyak, 2025, seeking mandatory insurance and compensation for farmers; the National Ranking and Accreditation Authority for Higher Educational Institutions Bill, 2025, proposing an independent framework for ranking and accreditation of higher educational institutions; and the Pravasi Bharatiya Kaushal Evam Pratibha Prerak Vidheyak 2025, aimed at mobilising the skills, expertise and resources of the Indian diaspora for national development.
