Chandigarh, 14 October 2026: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Northern Regional Office, Chandigarh, celebrated World Standards Day 2026 at Hotel Shivalikview, Chandigarh on the theme “Shared Vision for a Better World – SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy”. Every year, on 14th October, the World Standards Day is celebrated across the globe to recognize the important role that standards play in our daily lives and in global economic and social development, and to pay tribute to the thousands of experts worldwide who develop these standards through consensus and collaborative efforts.
Hon’ble Minister of State, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs and Printing & Stationery, Govt. of Haryana, Shri Rajesh Nagar jigraced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Other dignitaries present included, Shri Saurabh Joshi, Hon’ble Mayor of Chandigarh; along with industry representatives, BIS licensees, consumer organisations, technical experts and other stakeholders.
Hon’ble Minister of FCS&CA, Shri Rajesh Nagar ji underscored the importance of standards in promoting quality, sustainable development and economic growth. He emphasised that World Standards Day reminds us that India is an integral part of the global standards ecosystem. He highlighted that in an increasingly interconnected world, Indian industry cannot operate in isolation, and products manufactured in Haryana or anywhere in India must increasingly meet the expectations of consumers not only within the country but also in international markets. He further added that this makes the role of the Bureau of Indian Standards extremely important as BIS provides the institutional framework through which India develops, maintains and promotes standards for products, processes and services. He stressed that, whatever is manufactured in India should be trusted across the world, with the ISI Mark, BIS certification and hallmarking serving as symbols of reliability and confidence for consumers. While talking about the voluntary nature of the standards, he highlighted that wherever considered necessary in the public interest, the Government of India has made compliance with specified Indian Standards compulsory through the issuance of Quality Control Orders (QCOs).
While appreciating BIS for strengthening quality consciousness among industry and consumers, he called for wider adoption of standards to support a quality-driven and sustainable future.
Shri Saurabh Joshi, Hon’ble Mayor of Chandigarh, highlighted the role of standards in making cities safer, more efficient and sustainable. Referring to Chandigarh’s initiatives in renewable energy and energy-efficient public services, he emphasised that standards are equally important in everyday urban infrastructure such as street lighting, water supply, drainage and public works. He stressed that quality should be considered from the planning and procurement stage through construction and maintenance, so that public infrastructure remains safe, durable and delivers value to citizens.

Shri Deepak Kumar Singla, Scientist-F & Deputy Director General, BIS Northern Regional Office, acknowledged the contribution of thousands of stakeholders involved in standardization ecosystem and importance of standards in achievement of objectives of Sustainable Development Goals. He explained that standards are much more than the just technical documents, they are a common language of quality, safety, efficiency and trust which helps to translate the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals into practical action. He also emphasized the importance of quality manufacturing in the country and need to move from mere quality consciousness to quality culture to realize the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. He further stressed that quality is not only the responsibility of an individual organisation, it is shared and collective efforts of all the stakeholders.
The technical session on “Standards as Enablers of Clean Energy and Sustainable Built Environment” featured experts from Godrej Interio, Jindal Stainless Limited, Tata Steel Limited, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR), CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organization and BIS. The session explored how standards support energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials, resource-efficient buildings and the adoption of clean-energy technologies while ensuring quality, safety and performance.
BIS felicitated its stakeholders for their significant contributions towards implementation and compliance to the standards as well as for recognising their role in strengthening the culture of quality and standardization.
Standards serve as important enablers of SDG 7 ‘Affordable and Clean Energy’ and support India’s long-term commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. They provide benchmarks for the safety, quality, efficiency and performance of energy-related products and systems, support the adoption of renewable energy technologies, improve energy efficiency across buildings, appliances and industries, and facilitate innovation and interoperability. In this way, standards help translate India’s clean-energy ambitions into practical and sustainable solutions, contributing to the journey towards a net-zero future.
The celebration reaffirmed the commitment of BIS to advancing quality, sustainability and innovation through standardization, underscoring the role of standards in translating the vision of a better and more sustainable world into action.
