De-Weeding of Sukhna Lake
The Sukhna Lake is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Chandigarh, has been facing an increase in aquatic weed growth, which impacts water quality and threatens the health of the eco-system. These weeds not only affect the lake’s biodiversity but also obstruct recreational activities such as boating and water sports.
In on-going efforts to maintain the ecological balance and enhance the scenic beauty of the Sukhna Lake, the Engineering Department of the Chandigarh Administration has commenced the process of de-weeding the lake by mechanically for quick removal of weed from Sukhna Lake, which will continue till the end of December, 2024.
The de-weeding process aims to restore the lake’s water clarity and improve the habitat for native aquatic species. The operation will also involve manual removal of the invasive aquatic plants, followed by a series of ecological measures to prevent further weed growth. These efforts are part of a larger initiative to preserve the environmental integrity of the lake and ensure its long-term sustainability.
The Chandigarh Administration seeks the cooperation of residents and visitors in maintaining the cleanliness of the area and urges them to refrain from littering and indulging in activities that could further degrade the lake’s environment.
