PGI Rheumatologist Prof Aman Sharma becomes Incoming President of Indian Rheumatology Association

Dr Aman Sharma, Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology services, Department of Internal Medicine has been chosen as the President Elect of Indian Rheumatology Association. Indian Rheumatology Association is the National body of around 1500 Indian Rheumatologists. The result of the recently held elections was declared on 30th October, 2023 and he won with an overwhelming majority.

Dr Aman has been working in the field of Rheumatology for more than two decades and has established himself as an international expert in the field of rare rheumatological diseases like Systemic Vasculitis and Relapsing Polychondritis. He was recently invited to visit the NIH by Dr Peter Grayson, Director NIH Vasculitis program. Dr Aman was also invited to deliver the NIAMS (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases), National Institute of Health USA Rheumatology Grand rounds on “Exciting world of vasculitis and Relapsing Polychondritis: care and clinical research’ last year. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases is one of the institutes and centres that make up the National Institutes of Health, an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
This is a very rare honour for any Indian Rheumatologist and he is perhaps the first Indian invited to deliver the NIAMS NIH grand rounds.

He is credited with description of new disease entity DADA2 in adults for which he was invited for the Inaugural lecture during the international DADA2 Conference hosted from NIH in 2020. He also expanded the spectrum of clinical presentation of a newly described disease entity VEXAS syndrome.

He is also the Editor in Chief of the Indian Journal of Rheumatology (the official, peer-reviewed publication of the Indian Rheumatology Association, and Associate Editor of International Journal of Rheumatic diseases(official journal of the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology) and Frontier in Medicine(Rheumatology).He is on the editorial board of various other international journals and served as peer reviews of various major international journals like NEJM, Lancet, Annals of Rheumatic diseases and Arthritis and Rheumatology etc. He has more than 510 publications in peer reviewed journals, more than 60 book chapters and has edited many books including two editions of popular Textbook of Systemic vasculitis. He is also the current Honorary Secretary of Indian Rheumatology Association. He was instrumental in starting the DM Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology Program at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
