6-Digit HUID under Hallmarking System Assures Traceability of Silver Jewellery & Artefacts
NEW DELHI, August 27, 2026: As India prepares for the upcoming festive season, the Bureau of Indian Standards under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Govt. of India BIS has expanded the HUID-based silver hallmarking ecosystem with 341 silver Assaying & Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across 102 districts, and more than 25,000 silver jewellers are registered with BIS.
Making six-digit alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) effective for voluntary silver hallmarking has strengthened consumer protection by bringing digital traceability to silver articles. Each hallmarked piece features the BIS Standard Mark, ‘SILVER’, purity grade, and the laser-marked 6-digit HUID.
Since the launch of the Silver HUID portal on 1 September 2025, over 77 lakh silver jewellery pieces have already been hallmarked with HUID. Purity grades 925 and 800 account for nearly 95 per cent of all hallmarked items. The Southern Region leads the country in the volume of silver hallmarking, with 62 per cent, followed by the Western Region at 18 per cent and the Central Region at 10 per cent.
Hallmarking provides consumers with third-party assurance of the purity or fineness of precious metal jewellery. The hallmarking scheme for silver jewellery and artefacts was launched in October 2005 on a voluntary basis. Under the scheme, silver jewellers are granted a Certificate of Registration in accordance with Indian Standard, IS 2112 ‘Silver and Silver alloys Jewellery and Artefacts – Fineness and Marking’ to sell hallmarked silver jewellery. The standard specifies seven grades of silver alloys, expressed in parts per thousand (ppt) — 999, 990, 970, 958, 925, 835, and 800 for the manufacture of silver jewellery and artefacts.
BIS Market Survey: Understanding Consumer Demand and Market Practices
To better understand prevailing market practices in the silver jewellery trade and manufacturing sector, BIS conducted a market survey through its network of Branch Offices. The survey recorded 4,971 responses covering 30 States and Union Territories across 345 districts.
Articles in the 10–25 gram and 25–50 gram categories account for the highest market demand, together representing nearly 74 per cent of responses. The survey found that anklets/payals, chains, toe rings, finger rings and bracelets are among the most commonly sold silver articles. The most commonly sold silver grades are 925 ppt and 800 ppt.
A Simple Check for a Safer Purchase
This festive season, consumers purchasing silver jewellery can take a simple step towards a more informed and confident purchase: look for the BIS hallmark and verify the HUID through the BIS CARE app. Consumers are advised to purchase only hallmarked silver jewellery from BIS Registered Jewellers to be assured of its purity. Consumers should also obtain a proper invoice for the purchase of silver articles and retain it for future reference.
In case of any discrepancy in the hallmark or HUID details, or suspected misuse of the BIS hallmark, consumers may lodge a complaint with BIS through the BIS CARE app or the BIS website. Consumers can also check the list of BIS Registered Jewellers in their vicinity on the BIS website at www.bis.gov.in. The HUID verification system puts essential information about the hallmarked article at consumers’ fingertips, promoting greater transparency, traceability, and confidence at the time of purchase.
