DGP Haryana call for drug-free society

Chandigarh, June 25 – Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, Sh. Manoj Yadava described a drug-free and healthy society as need of the hour as added that Haryana Police is working relentlessly to completely weed out the menace of drug trafficking from the State.

In a message issued on the eve of ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ here today, the DGP said that the day is observed on June 26 every year to raise awareness about the major problem that illicit drugs poses to the society as well as strengthen global action and cooperation to achieve the goal of a society free of drug abuse.

Mr Yadava said that both the Chief Minister, Sh. Manohar Lal and Home Minister, Sh. Anil Vij had brought the country’s northern states on a single platform for better sharing of intelligence and information to effectively tackle the drug menace. The State Government had also set a target to make Haryana a drug-free state.

In line with the government’s commitment and with the active support of people, the DGP informed that Police had foiled almost all attempts of interstate drug peddlers to push a massive consignment of narcotics into the state with the seizure of whopping 21,787 kg drugs including 144.799 kg opium 183.495 kg charas/sulpha, 14355 kg poppy husk, 17.72 kg smack, 7064 kg ganja and 21.861 kg heroin during 14 months between January 2019 and February 2020. Our teams have also confiscated close to 18 lakh medicines fallen under the category of prohibited drugs during the same period. In addition, 3853 kg drugs were also recovered upto lockdown 4.0 (from March 23 to May 31).

The district Police Chiefs (CPs and SPs) had been instructed to take stringent action against drug peddlers. At the same time, all the field units in districts are also organizing drug de-addiction awareness campaigns and sensitizing the people especially youth about the ill-effects of drugs across the State.

Seeking support of the civil society to eradicate menace of drug abuse, the DGP said that cooperation of every section of society is required to completely crush the menace of drug abuse. He also urged the common people to come forward and help the police with any information against the drug peddlers to save our younger generation from the ill-effects of drug addiction.

“We are also motivating the youths through painting contests, awareness rallies and other modes to refrain from using drugs. It was the duty of every citizen to contribute to creating awareness among masses, especially youths to say no to drugs, he added.”
