Large left lung tumour treated successfully with an indigenously developed technique at Park
Chandigarh: A 73-year-old female patient got a new lease of life after a large left lung tumour was treated successfully at Park Grecian Hospital, Mohali with the latest surgical technology combined with an indigenously developed and globally validated surgical technique.
After failing to respond to maximum medical therapies, the patient, a frail and malnourished elderly woman was referred to Dr. Harinder Singh Bedi, director–cardio thoracic surgery at Park Grecian Hospital.
Given the patient’s age and condition, there was a strong clinical suspicion of malignancy. An initial needle biopsy was inconclusive, making timely surgical intervention crucial.
After comprehensive evaluation, a left upper lobectomy was planned. Such major lung surgeries in frail elderly patients carry a high risk of bronchopleural fistula (BPF) which is a potentially fatal postoperative complication involving air leakage from the airway, said Dr Bedi.
The surgery was meticulously performed under special double-lung anesthesia using the latest bronchial blockers by Dr. Priyanka Goyal, cardiac anaesthetist.
To minimize the risk of BPF, the team employed advanced stapler-cutter technology along with the Bedi-IMA Buttress Technique, an innovative surgical method developed by Dr. Bedi.
The technique utilizes the patient’s own healthy tissue to reinforce the surgical site, reducing the likelihood of airway disruption.
The Bedi-IMA Buttress Technique has been scientifically validated, published in leading surgical journals, and presented at multiple national and international conferences. The patient made a swift and complete recovery, underscoring the effectiveness of combining innovation with advanced technology.
According to medical experts, postoperative air leaks are among the most serious complications following lung surgery, particularly in elderly patients. However, the use of tissue-based reinforcement techniques has been shown to significantly improve outcomes and shorten recovery time.
Dr. Bedi said that it was a matter of pride that this simple, yet effective surgical innovation was developed in India and was now being adopted by thoracic surgeons worldwide with excellent results.
He further said that those experiencing persistent breathlessness or cough that does not respond to initial treatment should seek early medical evaluation, as early diagnosis greatly improves treatment success. With the availability of state-of-the-art thoracic surgical facilities in Mohali, patients no longer need to travel to metro cities or abroad for advanced lung care, Dr Bedi informed.
