48-year-old woman gets rid of rare facial twitching disorder after successful surgery at Max
Chandigarh: A 48-year-old woman, suffering from a complex and rare case of ‘Hemifacial Spasm’, got rid of the problem after a successful surgery at Max Hospital, Mohali recently.
She was experiencing persistent, uncontrollable twitching on the right side of her face for over three months. The spasms, which involved the muscles around her eye and extended to her entire right facial region, caused considerable discomfort and emotional distress. Despite multiple consultations elsewhere, her symptoms persisted, prompting her to seek expert care.
The woman approached Max where upon evaluation, she was diagnosed with primary hemifacial spasm, a rare neurological condition caused by irritation of the facial nerve, said Dr. H.S. Bhatoe, senior director, neurosurgery at Max Hospital, Mohali
Explaining further, Dr. Bhatoe said that the cause of this condition is usually found to be idiopathic, meaning it is not hereditary or linked to any underlying disease.
“In this case, we identified the root cause as a vascular compression of the facial nerve and performed a delicate microvascular decompression to separate the offending vessel,”
“The patient is now completely free from pain and twitching. The successful outcome underscores our hospital’s expertise in managing complex neurological and neurosurgical disorders with a multidisciplinary, patient-centric approach,” maintained Dr. Bhatoe.
