Department of Social Welfare, Women & Child Development, Chandigarh Administration in convergence with Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), Rotary Club Chandigarh and Special Olympics Bharat is organising a three-day Special Olympics Games for Intellectual Divyangjan from 11th to 13th December, 2023, which is inaugurated today at Gymnasium Hall, Panjab University, Chandigarh. This is a unique initiative celebrating the abilities and spirit of 160 special athletes participating from six states of North India i.e., from Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttrakhand, J&K, Himachal Pradesh & Haryana.

The ceremony was commenced with the heart-warming bhajans and dance performances by the special athletes, showcasing their talents and enthusiasm.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Naveen Rattu, (DANICS) SDM South-cum-Joint Director, Social Welfare Department, Chandigarh along with international gold medallist Ms. Mani, released balloons to officially declare the meet open, symbolizing the soaring aspirations and joy of the participants. The other dignitary Mr. Ojaswee Sharma, National Awardee film Director graced the event. A meditation session conducted by Lama Ragbye provided a calming and rejuvenating experience for all participants.

Mr. Sanjeev Checker, Assistant Governor, Rotary Club Chandigarh Central extended a warm welcome to the guests, and Dr. Rita Kalra eloquently spoke about the significance of RYLA Vishesh. The athletes’ march past and oath-taking ceremony, was conducted during the event. The ceremony was further enlivened by the stirring background music provided by the Chandigarh Police Band. Partner Coordinator, Mr. Parikshat Mehdudia expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the collaborative effort that made this grand event possible. Presidents Mr. Jeeten Bhambari and Mr. Sunil Kansal shared insights into the flagship program RYLA Vishesh and detailed the three-day event’s activities.

The event also featured medical camp by GMSH-16 and an eye check-up camp by Grover Eye Hospital and a special smiles check-up and brushing workshop by Dr. Sanjay Kalra and the Smile Express team. The Department of Social Welfare has also set up a stall for the awareness of various schemes and programs of the Department. Further, special children showcased their joy and enthusiasm during the 100 meters race. However, the joint effort has set a benchmark in celebrating and empowering special athletes.

The said event promises to leave a lasting impact, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and joy during three days Special Olympics.
Day-2 (12-12-2023): A Celebration of Athleticism, Creativity, and Joy
The second day of the event under Special Olympic Bharat was a remarkable showcase of athletic prowess, creative expression, and unwavering enthusiasm. The event, attended by participants from various States, was a vibrant blend of sportsmanship, innovation, and fun. The following sports activities were undertaken on second day:

Athletic Events Take Center Stage:
The day was packed with a variety of athletic events including 50m, 100m, relay races, bocce, and badminton. Athletes demonstrated not just their physical abilities but also their spirit of determination and joy. Each participant, regardless of the outcome, was felicitated, reinforcing the event’s ethos of participation and celebration over competition.

Innovative Egg Peeling Workshop:
Assistant Governor Deepak Gupta led an innovative egg peeling workshop. This unique activity was not only enjoyable but also informative, highlighting the nutritional value of eggs in a fun and engaging way.

Art-Based Therapy for Healing:
Ms. Shuchi Gupta conducted an art-based therapy session, creating an atmosphere of healing and creativity. Participants worked together to create a vibrant and colorful canvas, symbolizing the collective spirit and diversity of the group.

Dance Sports Competition and DJ/Dance Night:
The dance sports competition was a highlight, featuring five contestants in a lively display of talent and rhythm. The pre-finale evening was further enlivened with a DJ/Dance night, where Rotarians, athletes, and volunteers came together in a joyous celebration, breaking barriers and fostering camaraderie.

The winners of various game events will be honoured during the closing ceremony on dated 13th December, 2023.
