PGIMER’s Department of Renal Transplant Surgery all set to host its landmark event ‘Golden Anniversary Summit on Kidney & Pancreas Transplantation’ from 24th-26th November

The Department of Renal Transplant Surgery at PGIMER is all set to host ‘ Golden Anniversary Summit on Kidney & Pancreas Transplantation ,’ its landmark event exemplifying department’s dedication to excellence in the field of renal and pancreas transplantation, from 24th to 26th November 2023 here at Chandigarh, stated Prof. Ashish Sharma, Head, Deptt. of Renal Transplant Surgery, PGIMER.

Prof. Sharma further elaborated, “To kick-start the Summit, an extremely engaging Public Awareness Campaign on Organ Donation & Transplantation is being organised at 1:30 pm onwards on Friday, 24th November 2023 at NINE Auditorium, PGIMER.”

Smt Kirron Kher, Hon’ble Member Parliament, Chandigarh has very kindly consented to be the Chief Guest at the Public Awareness Campaign and Prof Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER will grace the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

Detailing on the scope of the Summit, Prof. Sharma stated, “The Summit aims to address the critical needs in managing end-stage kidney failure patients, focusing on cutting-edge topics that include recent legislative changes regarding Donation after Cardiac Death, normothermic perfusion of deceased donor kidneys, and the challenges associated with simultaneous Kidney and Pancreas transplant.”

The academic sessions of the Summit featuring a distinguished panel of international faculty from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, along with leading national experts will be organised at Hotel Taj on 25th and 26th November. Dr. V.K.Paul, Member NITI Aayog will grace as the Chief Guest and Dr. Krishan Kumar, Head National Organ & Tissue Transplant Programe (NOTP) , Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and Prof. Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER will be the Guests of Honour for the academic sessions of the Summit at Hotel Taj on 25th November.

Highlighting the key accomplishments of the department, Prof. Ashish Sharma, stated, “PGIMER’s Department of Renal Transplant Surgery has maintained its position as one of the largest renal transplant departments in government institutions with active support of Department of Nephrology conducts over two hundred and fifty renal transplants annually. The department leads in deceased donor transplant programs in the public sector and is the sole government institute offering pancreas transplantation to patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal failure.”

The pancreas transplant program at PGIMER is currently the largest in the country, showcasing the department’s commitment to innovation and excellence in organ transplantation, further added Prof. Sharma.

Prof. Sharma further detailed, “In addition to transplantation, the department is a pioneer in specialized techniques for the creation of AV fistulas for hemodialysis vascular access. Conducting over one thousand AV fistula surgeries annually, the department offers advanced procedures such as ultrasound-guided angioplasties, fluoroscopy-guided angioplasties, and endoscopic vein mobilization for AV fistula creation—the first of its kind in the country.”

“In view of the convergence of the best in the field at the Summit, the event will present a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students to engage in discussions, share insights, and foster collaborations,” wrapped up Prof. Sharma
