University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, (UIFT & VD),
Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a webinar titled “3 D PRINTING AND ITS
APPLICATION IN LIFESTYLE PRODUCTS” today.
Dr Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson of UIFT & VD, welcomed and introduced the speaker
Ashish Jain, Founder and Chief Happiness Officer of iTinker. iTinker is a non-profit
social enterprise that aim at enhancing practical skill sets of Indian students to
improve their future employability. This organisation uses a combination of
industry-leading gamification, social learning & real-life rewards to consistently
engage students for solving complex problems and enjoy intellectually stimulating
challenges.
Mr Ashish Jain introduced the participants to a revolutionary technology of creating
three dimensional products. He started the webinar with defining 3D Printing and
presenting a video of a miniature Taj Mahal being made with a 3D Printing
technology. It is a process through which a three dimensional solid object,
virtually of any shape is generated starting from a digital model. He also talked
about the advantages of 3D printing, such as the ability to produce very complex
shapes that would otherwise be impossible to construct by hand, customization and no
wastage of material. He supported his talk with videos elaborating usage in the
medical field, space and construction of buildings.
Discussing the benefits of 3D printing in the field of Fashion and Lifestyle, the
speaker showed 3D products which are being designed by designers such as clothing,
shoes, lamps, jewellery, accessories, puzzles, etc. He elaborated combination of
software and 3D print technology that would help people to sit at home and order
clothing that will be customized for them with the help of 3D printing. He called it
the “Amazons of the future”. He remarked that future factories will be multipurpose
increasing employment and manufacturing and entrepreneurs’ capabilities.
The participants had many interesting queries regarding the possibilities of 3D
printing in the field of fashion and the materials used for the same. Mr Ashish
encouraged the students to participate in a Design for Lifestyle Competition where
students will submit 3D designs and winners will be able to see their creation 3D
printed. The students were motivated and learnt the skill of 3D printing which they
can incorporate in their Fashion and Lifestyle design collections. Dr Anu H. Gupta
remarked that exposure to latest technologies as discussed in the webinar will
really help the budding designers and entrepreneurs to make a mark in the society at
national and global level.
More than 90 participants including faculty members from different universities and
colleges, research scholars and students attended the webinar.
