PGI celebrated the 9th International Day of Yoga with participation of more than 850 HCWs and their family and friends following this year’s theme of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and Har Ghar Har Aagan Yoga”. The hybrid event was organised by PGIMER’s Yoga centre, ‘CCRYN-Collaborative Centre for Mind Body Intervention through Yoga’ at PGIMER Sports Centre in early hours of 21st June 2023.
Director, Dean, Deputy Director, faculty, students, staff and their families practised Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) after lamp lighting by the Director, Dr. Vivek Lal. CYP is a protocol practised each year on International Day of Yoga, which was demonstrated by accredited Yoga trainers of PGIMER Yoga centre. Yoga mats, T-shirts and refreshments were also provided to all the participants by the Institute. On this occasion, Dr. Vivek Lal said “Yoga is when outer-self and inner-self are in harmony with each other, when outer-self is listening to inner-self the result is happiness and mental peace” and described International Day of Yoga as “festival of mental peace”. Yoga trainers from the centre and PGIMER PhD students, together, presented a mesmerising Yoga demonstration. Herbal plants were gifted to all the dignitaries as a token of appreciation. Later that morning, the CCRYN-Collaborative Centre for Mind Body Intervention through Yoga of PGIMER was inaugurated by Director at 7 AM followed by sweets and ‘Satvik’ breakfast. Dr. Lal said “Yoga brings people together, fostering a sense of unity and harmony among individuals and communities. It reminds us of our shared humanity and the interconnectedness of all living beings.” and reminded us with benefits of Yoga. He invited all PGI staff, faculty and patients to PGIMER’s own CCRYN Yoga Centre. Dr Lal praised the efforts of PGIMER Yoga Centre for putting up a grand celebration of International Day of Yoga and said “the patient care giver program should continue and provide the opportunity to expand the centre and make it sustainable”. The ceremony was a collective effort of faculty, senior residents, junior residents, PhD students, nursing staff, technical staff, administrative staff, security staff, attendants, and all the representative unions.
PGI also trained nodal persons from each Department in conducting daily 5 minute Y-break protocol at 11 AM so that they may go back to the Departments to cultivate 5-minute health and wellness break. Approximately, fifty nodal persons were trained for the same. PGIMER Yoga centre has been conducting a 45-minute Yoga sessions for patient’s caregivers, daily, since 1st June 2023, which was live-streamed on facebook page of CCRYN-Collaborative Centre for Mind Body Intervention through Yoga. The PGIMER Yoga centre has been doing working hard to provide health benefits through Yoga via daily sessions organised for faculty, staff and patients. In his address through AIR and at the Chandigarh admin Yoga Day function, Shri Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab & Administrator of Chandigarh congratulated PGIMER on taking steps in the direction of integrative medicine and started a CCRYN Yoga centre with the purpose of redefining the application of evidence based yoga for benefit of patients and HCWs alike. He also congratulated PGIMER research team for giving world’s first evidence to the health benefits of common yoga protocol. The Yoga centre has dedicated team of two Research Officers, two Yoga trainers and four Yoga spokes under the supervision of Professor-in-charge, Dr Akshay Anand. The PGIMER Yoga Centre publishes a journal, Integrative Medicine Case Reports. Dr Akshay invited everyone at the Yoga centre which is located in Research Block B at 6th floor. PGI’s post COVID journey towards Yoga Centre was profiled by All India Radio in the Sanjeevni program broadcast at 11 am outlining the need for evidence based protocolization of yoga at the hands of accredited Yoga trainers. Moreover, five projects have also kick-started under Yoga centre to generate and test evidence based Yoga protocols. He also informed that disease specific Yoga protocols needs to be developed for better treatment outcome. PGI Yoga Centre would also be releasing a manual of Yogic techniques to be published by Springer and organise a conference on holistic health in July 2023.
Yoga has gained popularity worldwide. Scientists around the world are accepting and testing the traditional science of Yoga with promising data. In this view, PGIMER has taken appropriate measures to include evidence-based yoga in its subsequent integrative health approach and research through its Yoga Centre.
