The programme began with a welcome address by the Secretary of the Ashram, Swami Bhitiharanandaji, who stated that the Ashram has been serving society since 1958 through value-based education, spiritual retreats, a mobile dispensary for nearby villages, a students’ hostel and a library. He urged everyone to cultivate firmness, love and a spirit of service in their hearts in accordance with the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
The Chief Guest, Shri H. Rajesh Prasad, IAS, Chief Secretary, UT Chandigarh said that although school curricula do not always present a detailed account of Swami Vivekananda’s life and work, his literature is available to all for study and inspiration. He noted that Swamiji brought the fundamental principles of Sanatana Dharma to the masses. He did not see God confined to temples but in every human being, and his teachings emphasized the welfare of all beyond differences of race, creed and caste. He described Swamiji as an ideal Guru and recalled his special message to the youth — to have faith in oneself — adding that by following his teachings India will regain its lost glory.
Swami Nirvikaranandaji, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission, Indore, speaking on the central theme of Swami Vivekananda’s message for our lives, said that Swami Vivekananda was one of the Saptarishis who descended on earth for the welfare of mankind at a time when the nation had lost its strength after centuries of slavery. He explained that Swamiji deeply understood the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna and preached them to the common people. He described “Shiva jnane jiva seva” as the most practical form of Vedanta and said that only after fulfilling basic needs can one think of religion.
Shri Sudheer Baweja, Member of the Managing Committee of the Ashram, spoke about the many struggles in the life of Swami Vivekananda, which he underwent cheerfully for the sake of his countrymen. He said that Swamiji had envisioned India as a world leader not merely in material achievements but in spiritual leadership, and that fulfilling this vision is the responsibility of all who benefit from his work.
On the occasion, winners of essay writing and group discussion competitions held on Swami Vivekananda Day were felicitated. College students from Chandigarh and nearby areas had participated in these competitions. Devotional songs were rendered by *Swami Divyavratanandaji* of Ramakrishna Mission, Guwahati, bringing the programme to a soulful conclusion.
