Max Hospital Bathinda docs perform mechanical thrombectomy to save aged man
Bathinda: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda, have given a new lease of life to a 70-year-old man who was suffering from a life-threatening acute pulmonary embolism — a blockage in the blood vessels of the lungs that can be fatal if not treated promptly.
The patient was brought to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda in a critical condition to the emergency department with sudden shortness of breath and a brief loss of consciousness. On further evaluation, it was revealed that his lung artery pressure was critically high, and his oxygen levels had dropped dangerously low, which in turn severely compromised his heart function. Standard treatment with blood thinners alone was not sufficient given the seriousness of his condition.
In a race against time, a team of doctors decided to perform a mechanical thrombectomy using the penumbra aspiration system, an advanced, minimally invasive procedure that removes blood clots from the lungs. The case was led by Dr. Dixit Goyal, consultant cardiology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Bathinda.
Commenting on the case, Dr. Dixit Goyal said, “This was a high-risk emergency case. The patient’s oxygen levels had dropped critically, and his heart was under immense strain. By using the minimally invasive Penumbra Aspiration System, we were able to extract large clots from both lungs, resulting in immediate improvement in the patient’s breathing. His oxygen levels rose to 100%, and lung artery pressure normalised. The patient recovered well after the procedure and was discharged within 04 days in stable condition.”
