FOSWAC and Citizens’ Association Sector 21 Staged a protest in sector 21 against the garbage collection policy imposed by the M.C. Chandigarh. Around 200 residents following the COVID -19 norms as prescribed by the Chandigarh Administration participated in the protest.
Baljinder Singh Bittu, Chairman FOSWAC expressed people’s anguish against the garbage collection policy. He said that the Municipal Corporation is hell bent to disturb the peaceful life of residents as they have started a new garbage collection scheme by purchasing around 400 new vehicles. The garbage collection charges are around three times more than earlier charges collected by various RWAs. He lamented the Corporation for arbitrarily imposing different rates to different residents in their water bills. Some residents’ event got hefty garbage collection charges up- to Rs. 4500/- He said that the garbage collection charges in water bills is very complicated because most of the houses have one single water meter and the owners are facing problem in collecting garbage charges from tenants and co-owners of housed. Some residents say that their children are living abroad and they used to join them for months with their houses locked. They will be charged for garbage collection without any garbage.
Baljinder Singh pointed that the vehicles deputed by the corporation are not performing their duty efficiently. In most of the city the garbage collection Rehris are doing the job efficiently.
J.S. Gogia, General Secretary of the FOSWAC said that the Corporation does not care at all for the comfort of the residents and is imposing useless policies on the residents. They are promoting Contractors in the City and are on looting spree. They are ruthlessly spending public money without any sense.
Pardeep Chopra secretary of Citizens’ Association sector 21 said that in the name of green tribunal the Corporation has spent crores of rupees in purchasing more than 400 diesel vehicles without caring for the pollution created by them thus defeating the purpose of pollution free city. He said that the residents are stressed about the future of garbage collection as they apprehend that the corporation will hand over garbage collection process to some private contractor who will exploit the residents.
