Haryana Police seizes 11.5 tonnes drugs during first half of 2020

Chandigarh, July 15 – In line with the government’s commitment to make Haryana a completely drug-free state, Police have intensified heat on drug-peddlers that resulted in the seizure of a whopping 11.5 tonnes of narcotics during first half of 2020 from across the State.

This year, till June, the Police have filed a total of 1343 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, in which 1821 people were arrested on the charges of peddling and possession of drugs.

Disclosing this here today, Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, Sh. Manoj Yadava said that in all 11568 kg 680 gram of illegal drugs were confiscated between January and June, this year. In a bid to prevent drug trafficking, Police under the able guidance of Home Minister Sh. Anil Vij, has taken a series of steps which include increased inter-state cooperation for exchange of information about drug mafia.

“We have adopted a multi-pronged strategy in fighting with drug menace as a result of which our field units including the Special Task Force have dismantled the potential supply of almost all types of narcotics in the state, added the DGP.”

Giving details of the seizure, the DGP informed that poppy husk was on top on the list of recoveries with 8043.2 kg followed by 3150 kg 96 gram ganja and 243 kg 436 gram opium. Police have also seized 102 kg 946 gram charas/sulpha, 2 kg 568 gram smack and 25 kg 568 gram of heroin from the possession of arrested accused. In addition, over 10.40 lakh tablets, capsules, injections and syrups fallen under the category of prohibited drugs were also recovered during this period.

Out of total, the maximum 401 cases with the arrest of 563 accused under NDPS Act were registered in district Sirsa. Similarly, 163 cases were registered in Fatehabad, 81 in Kurukshetra and 77 cases in Hisar.

The DGP said that illegal drugs have no place in our society and we will continue to speed up our operations against traffickers and drug cartel to save the people especially youth from drug menace. In addition, we are also preventing drug abuse through awareness and education, he added.
