World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year by people around the world on 14th June as per World Health assembly resolution of 2005, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner (14th June, 1868), who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system.
The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life saving gifts of blood and also to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure that all individuals and communities have access to affordable and timely supplies of safe and quality assured blood and blood products.
The theme of this year World Blood Donor Day is “Give blood, Give plasma, share life, share often” has been released by the WHO this year.
As part of Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsava 2023 of the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India that Healthy Donors are encouraged to continue donating blood.
On this occasion, Sh. Banwari Lal Purohit, Hon`ble Governor Punjab and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh inaugurated Blood Donation Camp at the Punjab Raj Bhawan, Chandigarh conducted by the of Department of Transfusion Medicine and called upon the residents of tricity on the All India Radio to come forward for this noble cause and save precious lives.
Prof. N.K. Panda, Dean (Academic), PGIMER, Chandigarh inaugurated the Blood Donation Camp at the Blood Donation Centre PGIMER, Chandigarh in collaboration with Thalassemia Charitable Trust (TCT), PGIMER, Chandigarh. He also motivated the blood donors to become regular blood donors, and make blood donation a “habit”, as this will encourage develop a culture of voluntary blood donation in the country. The other dignitaries who graced the occasion were Prof. Sadhna Lal and Prof. Pankaj Malhotra. Volunteer blood donors and family/friend blood donors from all walks of life also came to donate blood at the Blood Donation Centre of the PGI on this occasion like every year.
The department of Transfusion Medicine also organized Blood Donation Camp at Bridge Market, Sector-17, Chandigarh in collaboration with Shree Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust, Panchkula which was inaugurated by Sh. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor, Chandigarh University, Gharuan and Sh. R.C. Sobti, former Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University.
As a special motivational campaign, the postmen of UT, Chandigarh pinned up the specially made badges while delivering the post items in the respective post office zones in order to motivate blood donors.
During the campaign about 425 volunteers donated blood to celebrate the occasion.
