GREEN RATING SYSTEMS AND BUILDING CODES CRUCIAL IN DRIVING ADOPTION OF ENERGY-EFFICIENT COOLING TECHNOLOGIES SAY EXPERTS AT CII COOLEX 2023

Chandigarh, 22 April 2023: CII IGBC Chandigarh Chapter organised an Interactive Session on “Sustainable Cooling for a Low Carbon Future” on 22 April 2023, World Earth Day, as part of the 23rd Edition of CII Coolex. The event aimed to address the growing demand for sustainable cooling solutions in response to the increasing strain on energy systems and the exacerbation of the climate crisis.

The Interactive Session brought together experts from various fields, including architecture, engineering, construction, and climate science, to share and exchange the latest developments and innovations in sustainable cooling. The session explored a range of topics, including the current state of cooling technology and its impact on energy consumption and emissions, emerging technologies and trends in sustainable cooling, design strategies for minimizing cooling needs in buildings, and case studies.

Sharing the welcome remarks, Col Shailesh Pathak, Chairman, IGBC Chandigarh Chapter & CEO, Art & Glass Inc said, “Green Rating systems and building codes play a crucial role in driving the adoption of energy-efficient cooling technologies, which are essential for reducing our carbon footprint and mitigating the impact of climate change. The use of energy efficient ACs, such as those with inverter technology, can result in significant reductions in energy consumption and emissions of up to 50%. IGBC 31 different rating systems advocate and reward the use of for energy efficient appliances and eco-friendly and products among other green practices. With over 10,700 projects adopting IGBC’s Green and Net Zero Rating Systems, India currently has 10.26 Billion sq. ft. of registered green footprint which inculcates such sustainable principles.”

Ar Jit Kumar Gupta, Co-Chair, IGBC Green Hill Habitat Rating System & Former Advisor (Town Planning), PUDA, emphasized the need for green spaces and buildings in our planning and development processes. He said, “By prioritizing the incorporation of green spaces and green buildings, we can reduce energy consumption, improve air quality, and create a more liveable environment for all. As the world moves towards low carbon emissions, IGBC’s launched a Mission on Net Zero has been successful in this endeavour, with more than 350 leading organisations committing to achieve Net Zero status for their new and existing buildings, in which energy plays a key role.”

Mr Jagjit Singh Majha, Co-Chairman, IGBC Chandigarh Chapter addressed the events and said, “The Green Building Movement in India is growing from strength to strength. Net zero and green buildings are a huge opportunity to slow down a rapidly warming earth. Action by businesses and stakeholders to promote and have Green & net zero buildings will be a competitive advantage for decades. IGBC is continuously working to advance Net zero concepts on several fronts including capacity building, development of technical manuals for Net Zero Energy, Net Zero Water, Net Zero Waste and Net Zero Carbon, demonstration of Net Zero concepts to showcase viability of new technologies and concepts.

Mr Ankur Nagar, Counsellor, CII, emphasized the need for energy efficiency in buildings and said, “Buildings are among the largest consumers of energy, and improving their energy efficiency can have a significant impact on reducing our carbon footprint. As we move towards a cleaner and more sustainable future, it is crucial that we prioritize energy efficiency in our building practices and encourage the adoption of renewable energy sources.”

The session was part of the ongoing CII Coolex Exhibition on Air-Conditioning, Refrigeration & Ventilation, which is showcasing the best of technologies in energy-saving, intelligent, and eco-friendly solutions for commercial and industrial enterprises as well as households. The exhibition is being held at Himachal Bhawan, Sector 28, Chandigarh, until 24 April 2023.
