CELEBRATION OF THE FOUNDATION DAY OF CHANDIGARH

Over 100 take part in Heritage walk of Capitol Complex

Chandigarh, 31st October 2021: As a part of the celebration of the Foundation day of Chandigarh the Department of Tourism conducted a specially guided heritage walk of the Capitol Complex.

Over 100 people joined the tour guided by Deepika Gandhi, Director Le Corbusier Centre as they explored the various buildings and features of the Capital complex. Gandhi underlined the reasons why the Capitol Complex was deemed worthy of been given the world heritage status and what it means for the relatively young city of Chandigarh.

The enthusiastic group comprising of students and senior citizens as well, learnt about the genesis of the Capitol Complex and Corbusier’s philosophy and theories about the making of the administrative head of the city. Each building was explained in detail revealing many unknown facets about their design and construction to the participants along with the symbolism behind the elements of the High court and Assembly buildings. Gandhi emphasized though many examples along the tour the technical feat of construction of the iconic buildings of the Capitol within the constraints of technology and finances. The participants were afforded a much coveted glimpse of the interiors of the Assembly Hall as also the view from the terrace of the Secretariat building.

The walk ended at the rooftop restaurant of the Secretariat building-the highest point of the city with much deserved refreshments for the participants. Deepika Gandhi informed that this was the first Heritage walk conducted after the Covid lockdowns and looking at the enthusiastic response such dedicated walks shall be conducted more often in the future.

However the tourism Department already conducts regular guided tours for general public and tourist three times a day, free of cost which should be availed by the citizens to discover their very own World Heritage site.
