3rd Global Law Conference on environmental laws and constitutional rights begins in Chandigarh University

The third edition of the Global Law Conference was inaugurated today at Chandigarh University (CU), Gharuan by the Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal. The Conference commenced after the ceremonial lighting of lamp by the Hon’ble Minister. The conference was presided over by Justice BR Gavai, Judge Supreme Court of India, in the esteemed presence of Shri R Venkataramani, Attorney General of India.

With the theme of the event as ‘Environmental Laws & Constitutional Rights: A Global Perspective’, the conference was attended by legal experts, academicians, and supreme court judges of seven countries – India, Nepal, Hawaii, Philippines, Brazil, Brussels, and other countries. During the conference, deliberations were held on environmental issues, sustainable development, and effective policies, laws, and international agreements to address the global climate crisis.

Addressing the audience specially students of the University , Hon’ble Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said that ‘’We all need to maintain a balance of five elements of nature within ourselves and should start making small changes in our lifestyle to achieve greater results leading to better environment and sufficient resources for our generations to come’’. The Minister also mentioned the success of his programme ‘One Night with Moon Light ‘ to spread awareness about the benefits of moon light deep rooted in our ancestral lifestyle.After the inaugural session, the Minister also addressed a Press Conference with the media on various issues.
This international conference aims to sensitize the youth, professionals, social workers, community members, and people from all walks of life about Environmental Diversity and Environmental Jurisprudence. It will help in understanding various issues of mitigating climate change and find solutions for protecting the environment among all to build a sustainable future together. India took up the Presidency of G-20 with the theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ – the concept of a planetary family, which aims to unite nations across the globe to work together for addressing the climate crisis and making this world a better place to live in.
The important dignitaries included Justice Ananda Mohan, Judge of Supreme Court of Nepal; Justice V. Kameswar Rao, Judge of Delhi High Court; Justice Arun Palli, Judge of Punjab & Haryana High Court; Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, Chief Justice Himachal Pradesh High Court; Justice Rajesh Bindal, Judge Supreme Court of India; Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, Former & Founder Vice Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi; Joginder Keshari Ghimire, Principal Counsel, Office of the General Counsel, Asian Development Bank; and Prof. Md. Zafar Mahfooz Nomani, Professor, Aligarh Muslim University.
Apart from this, retired judges of Punjab & Haryana High Court, members of Bar Council of India (BCI) and Punjab Pollution Control Board, judicial academicians, and students from various law schools also attended the conference. Chancellor Chandigarh University Satnam Singh Sandhu, ; Prof. (Dr.) R.S. Bawa, Pro-Chancellor Chandigarh University, and Prof. Himani Sood, Senior Vice President Chandigarh University also welcomed the dignitaries present on the occasion.

It is noteworthy that Chandigarh University also organized the first edition of Global Law Conference in 2019 and second edition of the conference in 2022 on the theme- ‘Climate Change, Environmental Law and Constitutional Rights’.
