– 4 जुलाई 2018 को सोनाली ने सोशल मीडिया के जरिए यह बताया था कि वे कैंसर से जूझ रही हैं और इसका इलाज कराने न्यूयॉर्क जा रही हैं। रविवार को जब वे न्यूयॉर्क से मुंबई के लिए रवाना हुईं तो सोशल मीडिया के जरिए ही अपनी घर वापसी की खुशी जाहिर की। उन्होंने लिखा था, "दूरियां अक्सर दिलों में प्यार बढ़ा देती हैं और इस बात को भी नजरअंदाज नहीं करना चाहिए कि दूरियां हमें क्या सिखाती हैं। घर से न्यूयॉर्क तक के सफर में मैंने कई कहानियों को अपने साथ महसूस किया। हर कोई अपनी कहानी को अपने तरीके से लिखने की कोशिश करता है। अब मैं वापस आ रही हूं वहां जहां मेरा दिल है।"
लड़ाई अभी खत्म नहीं हुई है : सोनाली
– सोनाली ने अपनी पोस्ट में आगे लिखा था, "अभी ऐसी फीलिंग आ रही है, जिसे मैं शब्दों में बता नहीं कर सकती। जल्द मैं अपने परिवार और फैमिली से मिलने का सुख उठा सकूंगी। मुझे एक्साइटमेंट है कि मैं अब वो सब कर पाऊंगी, जो करना चाहती थी। खास तौर पर उस सफर का, जिसे अब तक मैंने तय किया। लड़ाई अभी खत्म नहीं हुई है। लेकिन मैं खुश हूं और इस हैप्पी इंटरवल का इंतजार कर रही हूं। यह जानने का समय है कि यह एक सामान्य पल नहीं है, बस मैं उसे गले लगाने का और इंतजार नहीं कर सकती।" सोनाली ने पोस्ट के आखिर में क्रिस मार्टिन का एक कोटेशन लिखा है- "जो भी आप चाहते हैं वह आपसे केवल एक सपने जितना ही दूर है। हम वे हीरे हैं जो इस दबाव और वजन के कारण ही आकार ले रहे हैं।"
