The Department of Economics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today organised a Panel Discussion cum One Day National Seminar focused on the theme “35 Years of Economic Reforms in India”, a tribute to the distinguished alumni of the department, Dr. Manmohan Singh on 27th March 2025.
The event was conducted in collaboration with ICSSR-North-Western Regional Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh in the Golden Jubilee Hall. The esteemed guests included Shri Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India, Prof. Latika Sharma, Dean, Alumni relations, Prof. Sanjai Bhatt, President, National Association of Professional Social Workers in India, Dr. Ashutosh Kumar, Department of Political Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Prof. Ranjan Aneja, Dean School of Business and Management Studies, Central University of Haryana.
The Seminar commenced with a warm welcome extended by Dr. Smita Sharma, Chairperson, Department of Economics to all the esteemed guests along with a brief introduction of the theme of today’s seminar. This was followed by an insightful address by Prof. Latika Sharma that urged the students to draw inspiration from the illustrious tenure of Dr. Manmohan Singh and contribute to the economic growth of the nation.
The esteemed chief guest of the seminar, Shri Satya Pal Jain enlightened the gathering about the deep connection of Dr. Manmohan Singh with Panjab University and the critical role he played in India’s economic growth. He stressed upon that youth need to be Awaken, be Aware, Alert, Assertive and Aggressive when need be. He also underlined the need to keep the National Interest supreme.
Following this the Keynote address was delivered online by Prof. KJ Joseph, Director, Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He shed light on the journey of India’s economic reforms and the changes in its economic policy framework in the light of globalization, federalism and environmental changes.
The valedictory address for the seminar was delivered by former PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Arun Grover.
