Gurugram, 20 May: As part of its flood preparedness measures ahead of the monsoon season, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated mock drills at underpasses across the city to assess the operational readiness of pumping machinery, DG sets, and drainage infrastructure. The mock drills commenced from Thursday onwards and several major underpasses have been covered so far to ensure that all systems are functioning at optimum capacity for effective storm water management during heavy rainfall.

During the mock drills, water was released into the sump wells of the underpasses and the installed pumping machinery was activated to evaluate discharge efficiency, response time, and overall operational performance. DG sets and associated electrical systems were also tested to ensure uninterrupted functioning during emergency situations and power outages. Simultaneously, the drainage infrastructure at the sites was inspected for smooth storm water flow and overall preparedness.

At Signature Tower Underpass, eight pumps of 20 HP capacity each were tested and found to be working satisfactorily. At HUDA City Centre Underpass, four pumps of 7.5 HP capacity each were inspected and were functioning satisfactorily. Similarly, four pumps of 20 HP capacity installed at Ambience Underpass and two pumps of 25 HP capacity at Vatika Underpass were also found operational during the exercise.

At Sikanderpur Underpass, four pumps of 25 HP capacity each were checked and found to be functioning satisfactorily. At both DLF Cyber City U-turn Underpasses, four pumps of 16 HP capacity along with one pump of 25 HP capacity were tested and found operational. Likewise, four pumps of 20 HP capacity at IFFCO Chowk Underpass were inspected and found to be working satisfactorily. At Shankar Chowk Underpass, two pumps of 16 HP capacity and two pumps of 7.5 HP capacity were tested successfully. Additionally, at DLF Phase-1 Underpass, four pumps of 35 HP capacity were inspected and found fully operational.

The mock drills were conducted in coordination with concerned officials of NHAI and DLF as per their respective jurisdictions to ensure coordinated preparedness and effective response mechanisms during the monsoon season. GMDA officials stated that such exercises are being carried out proactively across vulnerable locations in the city to strengthen flood management systems and minimise the risk of waterlogging during intense rainfall events.

GMDA further informed that similar mock drills will also be conducted at Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Medanta Road, Atul Kataria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, Genpact Underpass, Subhash Chowk, Dhanwapur Underpass, Sector-110/113 Underpass, Sector-109/110 Underpass, Sector-102/104 Underpass, and Sector-84/36B Underpass in the coming days as part of the city-wide monsoon preparedness exercise.
