Prof. Thapa was an eminent Pediatric Gastroenterologist

Chandigarh : February 10 : The PGI fraternity wishes to inform the sad demise of Prof. BR Thapa, former Head Dept. of Gastroenterology. He was ailing from chronic renal failure and a cardiac illness for a prolonged duration. He left for his heavenly abode on the night of 9th Feb, 2021. Prof. Thapa was HOD of Gastroenterology from 2015 to 2018.

Prof. Thapa was an eminent Pediatric Gastroenterologist and started the DM program in Pediatric Gastroenterology at PGI in 2015. He has trained several DM and MD students in pediatric Gastroenterology during his tenure as Faculty in the Dept of Gastroenterology, PGIMER, Chandigarh. He was an acute clinician, a caring physician and has contributed phenomenally for the growth of pediatric Gastroenterology in PGI as well as in the country. He has several academic contribution in the field of gastroenterology: celiac disease, endoscopic therapy in children, Wilson’s disease, colonic polyposis and various childhood GI diseases.

He has won several awards and delivered orations in various national conferences. He was also the past president of the Indian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

He was a humble, down to earth person who was easily approachable by patient and staff. He took utmost care in providing medical treatment to all his patients with empathy and humanness. Such physicians are rare to find today. The department of Gastroenterology and the PGI fraternity deeply mourn his untimely demise.
