Government Multispecialty Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh Celebrates 20th Anniversary of World Blood Donor Day with Enthusiastic Participation.

Chandigarh, 14 June 2024: The Blood Centre at the Government Multispecialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, Chandigarh, celebrated the 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day today with great enthusiasm. The theme for this year’s celebration is “20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors!” The event saw 101 donors come forward to donate blood, significantly contributing to the hospital’s blood bank reserves.

The camp was inaugurated by Health Secretary, Mr. Ajay Chagti, IAS, alongwith Dr. Suman, Director Health & Family Welfare, U.T. Chandigarh, presiding over the event. In his address, the Health Secretary emphasized the importance of voluntary blood donation and the critical need to raise awareness about the cause. He honoured and encouraged all donors present for their selfless contributions.

Dr. Suman highlighted the necessity of regular and safe blood donors to maintain an adequate supply of blood. This is crucial for saving the lives of patients suffering from severe anemia, cancer, Thalassaemia, accident injuries, and obstetric complications. The Director also underscored the importance of holding regular blood donation camps to ensure a steady supply of blood.

The event was organized in association with the State Bank of India, GMSH-16 branch. The hospital staff, including doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, housekeeping staff, and security personnel, along with regular donors, participated zealously.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Sushil Kumar Mahi and Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Parmjit Singh expressed their gratitude to the blood donors for their selfless service. They also recognized the role of NGOs and other organizations in facilitating these camps, which are held monthly, collecting approximately 6000 units of blood annually.

A free blood grouping camp was also organized for prospective donors, and informational materials on blood donation were distributed to raise awareness. All attendees took a pledge to continue raising awareness about the importance of blood donation.

The Blood Centre at GMSH-16 serves the tricity area and neighboring states, ensuring a stable blood supply to patients admitted to GMSH-16 and its linked Blood Storage Centres at Civil Hospital Sector 22, Civil Hospital Sector 45, and Civil Hospital Manimajra.
