WORLD ANTI-OBESITY DAY CELEBRATION AT PGIMER

The Department of Dietetics, PGIMER, celebrated the World Anti-Obesity Day which is celebrated in all over the world on November 26th every year. SPECIAL ANTI-OBESITY CLINIC for the patients visiting various medicine OPD’s covering endo, gastro and bariatric surgery was conducted.
Dieticians from the department disseminated structured diet plans along with proper nutritional counseling to the beneficiaries. The day was celebrated to create awareness about the most serious diseases as well as the root cause of many serious diseases; that is obesity.Obesity is a primary risk factor for several leading causes of death, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and various types of cancer.

Dr. Nancy Sahni, Chief Dietician, Department of Dietetics, shared “Central obesity or excessive fat accumulation presents a health risk at any stage of life, but it can be well reversed by treating the root cause of the disease. By accurately calculating body mass index (BMI) and adopting a practical therapeutic approach to weight management, individuals can significantly reduce the risk of comorbidities associated with obesity.”

Prof. Ashutosh Rastogi from department of Endocrinology and Prof. Pankaj Arora, DMS, Hospital Administration , also interacted with the patients. More than 100 patients were given nutritional counseling and tailor made diet charts.

Non communicable diseases and rapidly growing lifestyle changes are a leading cause of central obesity, making it a major health issue in India. PGIMER, being the tertiary care hospital receives tremendous footfall from neighboring states and it is observed that in the last few decades, the prevalence of obesity has significantly increased.
The key objective of celebration of anti-obesity day was to convey practical solutions to help people achieve and maintain a healthy weight, undertake proper treatment and reverse the obesity crisis. It also formulates diet plans according to the therapeutic needs of the patients.
