Seventh two days course on ‘Role of Nurses in prevention and management of Chronic NCDs
Theme: “Task shifting to Nurse professionals”
20th to 21stJanuary2025
Seventh two days course on role of nurses in prevention and management of NCDs on the theme “Task shifting to nurse professionals” was organized by National Institute of Nursing \Education, PGIMER in collaboration with World NCD Federation from 20th to 21st January, 2025. The course was aimed at sensitizing and preparing the nurses for NCD management so that they can play a great role in prevention and management of these diseases. A total of 90participants from Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan participated in the course.
The course wasinaugurated by Prof.Rakesh Kapoor, Department of Radiotherapy and regional cancer centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh and Secretary, World NCD federation.In his inaugural address Prof. Kapoor emphasised that nurses are the frontline workers and play an important role in its prevention and management in hospital as well as in community setting. He emphasized that nurses are at par with doctors in prevention, management and rehabilitation of NCDs.DrSukhpal Kaur, Principal, NINE, PGI, Chandigarh reported that this in the 7th course in the series being organised by NINE in collaboration with world NCD federation and it will be a continuous feature in coming years too in order to empower more and more nurses regarding NCDs. Shealso highlighted that Nurses are the only health care professionals whoare with most of the patients during their hospitalisation. This is the best opportunity to educate the patients and their care givers about healthy living as they are more receptive during hospital stay.
DrSushmaKumari Saini,Associate Professor, NINE, PGI, Chandigarh, chaired the panel discussion on ‘Nurse practitioner in Indian context’ DrHanspreet Kaur, WHO representative, DrReeta Devi from IGNOU, DrKiranBatra, Principal, Mata Sahib Kaur collgeg of nursing, DrSarita Thakur, Registrar, HPNRC and MsSunaina, Community Health Officer were the panelists. Panel discussion concluded that the nurse practitioners can play important role in screening, diagnosing, treatment initiation, treatment monitoring and rehabilitation of people suffering from NCDs.
Topics discussed in the course werecardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cancer, COPD, NAFLD, CKD and mental illnesses, multisectoral action plan, NP-NCD, and population-based screening for common NCDs. DrKavita,Associate Professor, NINE, PGI, Chandigarh demonstrated the use of CVD risk assessment charts to the participants and they were also given a copy of it to use at their respective institutions.
All the sessions were interactive followed by good discussion. 10 CNE hours/ 2 CNE credits are allocated to the course by Indian Nursing Council. The delegates appreciated the effort of Institute for organising course on such an important topic.
