PGIMER’s Advanced Eye Centre celebrates World Sight Day 2021
The Advanced Eye Centre (AEC), Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India celebrated the World Sight Day 2021 on the 14th October 2021 under the leadership of Prof. Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER and Prof. S. S. Pandav, Head of Department. The theme for this year’s World Sight Day is ‘Love Your Eyes’.
The patients visiting the center were educated to take proper care of their eyes. Sweets and balloons were distributed amongst the children. This year AEC is focusing on preventable causes of blindness such as congenital cataract, retinopathy of prematurity, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
Around the world, at least 2.2 billion people have vision impairment. In at least 1 billion of these cases, vision impairment is either preventable or treatable. In the Indian scenario, almost 12% of our population has diabetes and almost 17% of them suffer from some form of diabetic retinopathy.
More than 12 million people suffer from glaucoma in India. There is increased thrust on developing effective screening programs for these diseases to catch them early and prevent blindness from them.
Special focus is also being given on emerging causes of blindness such as myopia, inherited retinal disorders, cortical visual impairment and age-related macular degeneration amongst others at the Advanced Eye Centre. The aim is to create a society where nobody should go blind for the lack of adequate treatment. Everybody should get their and their family members eyes checked once in a year.
