Institution building and nurturing initiatives in independent India
SPSTI, Chandigarh Chapter of NASI in association with the Fellows in Chandigarh region
of other two sister Science academies of the country and the members of INYASChandigarh Chapter propose to commemorate 75th year of Indian independence by
initiating a new series of Expository Lectures on institutions strengthened, nurtured,
planned and created since Indian independence in 1947. Eminent national icons, who have
deep knowledge of their respective institutions, shall describe the progress made and
articulate the challenges ahead. It is widely accepted that India has a rightful presence in
twenty first century among the community of nations by virtue of deliverance by the
national institutes and the national initiatives.
The science outreach activities of SPSTI are financially supported by Haryana State
Council of Science, Innovation & Technology (HSCSIT), Department of Science &
Technology, Govt. of Haryana.
The first Expository Lecture (Online) shall be delivered by Prof. N Sathyamurthy, the
founder Director (2007-17) of IISER, Mohali on the Teacher’s Day, September 5
(Sunday), 2021 at 11 AM on the topic ‘The Story of IISERs’.

Prof. Furqan Qamar, first Vice Chancellor (2010-14), Central University of
Himachal Pradesh and Secretary General, AIU (2014-19), ‘Central Universities:
Their conception and present status’, October 16, 2021 (commemorating Dr.
Kalam’s birth date).
Prof. Ved Prakash, Chairman, UGC (2013-17), ‘UGC, NCERT and NEUPA’,
November 11, 2021 (National Education Day).
Prof. S G Dhande, Director IIT Kanpur (2001-12), ‘IIT Heritage of India’,
November 20, 2021.
Prof. K.K. Talwar, Director, PGIMER (2004-11), ‘AIIMS, PGIMER and Medical
Education and Research in India’, December 4, 2021.
Prof. S.G. Dani, ex-Chairman, National Board for Higher Mathematics, ‘NBHM
and nurturing of mathematicians’, December 22, 2021 ( Ramanujan’s birth date).
