Chandigarh: The National Institute of Nursing Education in collaboration with department of Hospital Administration and Department of Anesthesia, PGIMER, Chandigarh organized a Workshop on “Role of Nurses in Triage and Disaster Preparedness”. Dr Sandhya Ghai, Principal, NINE welcomed the guests and emphasized that nurses has an important role to play in the Disaster Management Team. Hence training of nurses in the preparation for disaster management is essential. She welcomed the delegates and encouraged them to implement the knowledge and skill gained during this training. The Chief Guest Prof. Jagat Ram, Director, PGI inaugurated the event. He expressed that this was the first Workshop of its kind organized at the Institute. He told that disaster occurs every day somewhere in the world with miserable impact on individuals, families and communities which is very well evident in the emergency Trauma Ward of the PGIMER, Chandigarh. Therefore, a deliberate plan for responding to several types of emergencies and disasters is a need of the day. He congratulated the Principal, faculty and M.Sc. students for organizing such a knowledgeable Workshop. Dr Vipin Kaushal, Acting Medical Superintendent & Guest of Honour highlighted the need for this type of trainings as Continuing Nursing Education programs in future too. He advised that nurses and other health care providers should collaborate with officials involved at all levels of disaster preparedness.
Various issues related to phases, trends and preparedness of disaster and triage and assessment of trauma victims were discussed. A mock drill on disaster was held by M.Sc. students of the Institute. Around 200 nurses from PGIMER, Chandigarh and Punjab attended the Workshop.
