Chandigarh: Keeping in line with the objectives of the Joshi Foundation, the women wing of the Mazdoor Sena today started its belan (rolling pin) campaign against drugs. Hundreds of women members of the Sena today took out an awareness rally wielding belans in their hands. The rally was flagged off by Joshi Foundation chairman Saurabh Joshi from the Ramlila Ground in Mauli Jagra. He was accompanied by Dr. (Prof.) Akshay Anand from the PGI, SHO Baljeet Singh, Nitin, a social activist. The event was led by women wing president Parmila Chauhan under the guidance of Mazdoor Sena president Meghraj Verma.

Speaking on the occasion, Saurabh Joshi expressed his concerns on the increasing drug menace in the city.  Joshi said that the Sena had taken a resolve to make Chandigarh a drug-free city, which it will achieve at any cost.  At the same time Joshi urged the women to actively participate in such campaigns saying that the goal of drug eradication was impossible without women participation.

Dr. Akshay Anand, meanwhile lauded the initiative of women and said that women can play an important role in dealing with the menace of drugs. He, however, stressed the problem of drugs was a mental one and it has to be dealt accordingly. He stressed that the patients need to be identified properly. There are 50 to 60 per cent patients who are suffering with a mental problem, he said.

Mauli Jagran SHO Baljeet Singh said that the police can solve the problem only to a certain extent. Hence, while the law takes its course, the society, schools and families need to play a bigger role. Awareness is more effective than the law, said Singh.

The program was attended by Mazdoor Sena senior vice-president Kaliram, Kishan Chand Mandiyal, Parshuram, Om Prakash Sharma, secretary general Zoravar Singh, Madan Mandal, Ram Shukla, vice-president Barsawan Choudhary, youth wing president Sumer, Ram Sunder, Rajneesh Kumar Bhardwaj, joint secretary Surjit Singh Fauji, press secretary Jagroshan, office secretary Charan Singh, Shanti Devi, Sarita Chauhan, Babita and others.
