Chandigarh: Springing into action upon the strict orders of Mr. Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Punjab, Legal Metrology wing conducts raids on sweets shops, statewide.

During the two day long exercise, the teams of Legal Metrology Wing conducted as many as 223 inspections and booked 136 challans under various provisions of Legal Metrology Act and Rules including 74 for short weight, 35 for non verification of weighing machines, 8 for non display of verification certificate, 10 for overcharging, 8 for non declaration of Packaged Commodity Rules(PCR) and 1 for non PCR registration. Besides, compounding was done in 28 cases and Rs. 1,13,000 was collected as compounding fee, on the spot. The expected compounding fee from the challans is pegged around Rs.5,66,500.

Talking on the issue, Mr. Bharat Bhushan Ashu said that the present inspections were prompted by the written complaints received by the department. The department is bound to conduct special checks on the receipt of written complaints. So, people should come forward and help us tighten the noose around the defaulters, said he and added that “complacence towards ills begets corruption; people should shun the lackadaisical attitude and report. It will help us to take immediate remedial measures.”

It is pertinent to mention that it is for the second time within a week that Legal Metrology has conducted inspections at such a huge level. Earlier, in the week statewide checks were undertaken at the eating joints on Railway Stations,Bus Stands and the roadside Dhabas.
