PGI Professor delivers Prestigious Oration and Resident Doctors win Accolades at National Hematology Conference in Kolkata
The Indian national body on blood disorders, the Indian Society of Haematology & Blood Transfusion held its 63rd Annual Conference at Kolkata from November 3-6, 2022. Professor Reena Das, Head of the Hematology Department at PGIMER, Chandigarh was conferred the prestigious Malti Sathe Oration Award at this meeting. Dr. Das has been working in the field of molecular hematology since she joined PGI as faculty in 1996. She delivered her oration on the topic “Providing molecular diagnostic services for non-malignant hematological diseases: Trials, tribulations, and satisfactions” on November 5, 2022. Professor Das is a researcher of national and international repute in thalassemia and other red blood cell disorders as well as disorders of bleeding and clotting.
Several resident doctors and students won prizes in the meeting. Dr. Charanpreet Singh, Pool Officer in Department of Clinical Haematology and Medical Oncology won the first and second prizes in oral and poster sessions for his work on the deadly but curable blood cancer “acute promyelocytic leukemia”. Dr. Harpreet Virk, Senior Resident in Hematology Department, won the second prize for her poster on flow cytometric diagnostic tests for platelet diseases, while Ms. Namrata Singh, PhD student in Hematology Department, won the second prize for her research on genetics of thalassemia. Ms. Ritika Sharma from the Hematology Department and Ms. Rozy Thakur from the Pediatrics Department were finalists in the Dr. J.C. Patel Award Paper session.
In the National Hematology Quiz held on 6th November at the same meeting, the PGI team of Aishwarya Karthikeyan (Pathology), Prasanna Ethiraj S. (Medicine) and Prasanna (Pediatrics) came a very close second to AIIMS, New Delhi in a very keenly contested contest at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata. The six final quiz teams who contested were chosen after one year of college, state and zonal level rounds among post-graduate (MD) students in institutions across India.
