Former India captain Sardar announced his sudden retirement from international hockey. “Been around for 12 years,” he said, “got to pass on the baton to the next generation. Sardar said he made the decision after a disappointing Asian Games where India failed to defend their title and returned with a bronze medal. Sardar Singh has also stated that he wishes to play in Tokyo Games but as the last match had lost by them it stayed in his mind and after this failure he spoke to his family and decided to get retirement from international hockey. he told that this is his own decision and there is no other pressure on him. It is ture that in today era, there is a lack in mental balance and determination of players for which they always take psychiatric sessions. other then this self improvement is the most required thing. “I am fit to play hockey for at least couple of more years. But there is always a right time. And I feel this is the best time to start thinking about new ventures,” Sardar said. Sardar was also the youngest player to captain the India at the 2008 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. He received the Arjuna Award in 2012 and the Padma Shri in 2015. Last year, he was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
