I believe that true leadership is about ‘service before self’,being strongly committed, crediting juniors for tasks, putting yourself in the shoes of subordinates, and inspiring a collective spirit of excellence”, said Prof. Vivek Lal, Director PGIMER during the inaugural ceremony of 10-Day Nursing Leadership & Management program which is attended by senior nursing professionals of 7 countries. While narrating the incidents of recent fire outbreak and COVID 19 pandemic, Dr Lal applauded the spirit of nurses of PGIMER who showed utmost dedication and commitment during such adversities and stood like the backbone of the institute. Congratulating the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health for hosting this program for last 8 years, he said “IPHMDP is a true example of globalization that forge friendship for humanity and are a pride for our institute and country.”
Dr. Prof. Sonu Goel, PGIMER, Chandigarh and Program Director of 24th International Public Health Management Development Program (IPHMDP) said “Our program aims to shape nurse leaders by learning key leadership skills in the program who not only navigate the complexities of healthcare but also create a future where excellent patient care is the tune they play in every aspect of their work.”. He further stated that this Nursing Leadership & Management programis FIRST in the country for developing leadership skills among nursing professionals and practitioners. While hosting high tea for senior delegates of 7 countries of 4 continents namely Tanzania, Niger, Tajikistan, Seychelles, Maldives, Argentina, and Botswana, Dr Goel reaffirmed that the current leadership program is a perfect program which will help delegates in inculcating effective management and leadership techniques for betterment of the countries, besides building inter country and inter institutional collaborations. He said that the participants will learn skills like communication, team building, motivation, and other soft skills which will help in finetuning the health landscape of their countries for achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). More than 1200 senior delegates from 86 countries had already enhanced their skills through this flagship program of Indian Technical Economic Cooperation (ITEC), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India over the past eight years since the year 2016, he said. In the current era of COVID-19 and other emerging pandemics, the program has galvanized South- South development cooperation with 161 ITEC countries in Asia, Africa, East Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Pacific and Small Island countries under the ancient Indian philosophy ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakam’ i.e. world is one family, said Dr. Sonu Goel.
During the program, the experts taught the delegates through formal and informal training techniques like group thinking, inciting novice ideas, critical analysis, problem-solving exercises, case studies, management games and introduced them to learning through fun. During the 10-day program, the delegates shall also be showcased good practices of the PGIMER,Chandigarh: Government multispecialty hospital sector 16 and Fortis hospital Mohali which they shall replicate in their respective countries. Besides, there will be an interactive session of delegates with nurses in this region who have won accolades at various fora.
