Chandigarh, August 1:- Acting tough against the use of plastic bags in Chandigarh, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has started challaning consumers/general public carrying plastic bags in their hands. During a anti plastic raid in apni mandi at sector 40 the team of MCC issued 7 challans to the violators keeping plastic bags in their rehris and issued one challan of Rs. 5000 to consumer carrying fruits and vegetables in plastic bag.
Sh. K.K. Yadav, IAS, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh said that the MCC is conducting regular awareness campaigns and raids against the use of plastic and to enforce the ban on plastic bags & items etc. in city. He said that different teams of MCC are conducting regular raids and creating awareness among the sellers and users against the use of plastic and to use biodegradable bags only.
He said that the Municipal Corporation is conducting different workshops regarding the ban on plastic for enforcing staff and will conduct the same for the sellers in near future. He said that with the change of mindset of city people and stop of using plastic, the process of garbage disposal will improve.
The Commissioner appealed to the city residents to support the MCC against the use of plastic and next time walk down the streets and markets with your own carry bag instead using plastic bag. He said that the plastic bags manufacturers will be fined as per law and legal action will be taken against them as per provisions. He said that it is not only the MCC to enforce ban on the use of plastic bags but all citizens of city beautiful to take responsibility to eradicate plastic from the city.
