It is shocking that the Punjab CM Mr Bhagwant Mann has issued grossly incorrect statements on the reforms in Panjab University administration. He has said that the Centre has “dissolved the Senate and Syndicate” and has also called the restructuring as “undemocratic”. Firstly, Mr Mann should know that these bodies had been recommended to be ‘restructured’ and had not been ‘dissolved’. Also, in the recommended reform half the senate comprises of elected members out of the strength of 31, whereas there are ZERO elected senators in the Senates of Punjabi University and GND University out of their strength of more than 70 senators. The CM should inform the people of Punjab as to when the Senates of these Universities will become ‘democratic’. He has also stressed upon his connect with PU and that he will firmly maintain the rights of Punjab over PU. This is welcome and appreciated. However, he should answer why then is he starving this premier University of the funds due to it and giving it step-motherly treatment. I demand that the amount of Rs. 209 crores due to Panjab University from the Punjab Government be released immediately. Mr Mann should urgently announce the release of these funds and prove that he genuinely cares for PU.
