Senior Citizens Felicitated on International Day of Older Persons

Chandigarh, 16 December 2024: The Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, felicitated senior citizens at a grand ceremony organized to mark the International Day of Older Persons. The event, held at Law Bhawan, Sector 37, Chandigarh, was organized by the Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association. The Vice President of the Association, Shri Brij Kalra, felicitated Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria and expressed gratitude for his contributions to society.
Acknowledging the invaluable role of the elderly, the Governor said, “Senior citizens are the pillars of our society. Their experience and wisdom benefit not only their families but also the entire community.”
In his address, the Governor highlighted that the International Day of Older Persons is a significant occasion to honor those who have dedicated their lives to the service of society, family, and the nation. He emphasized that this day serves as a reminder to recognize and celebrate the wisdom, experience, and contributions of senior citizens in shaping society.
The Governor commended the efforts of the Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association, noting that it conducts numerous activities to enhance the lives of the elderly, such as physiotherapy, acupressure, yoga, adult education, and computer training programs. He mentioned that the Association, established on April 16, 1996, aims to address the growing needs of senior citizens in Chandigarh.
Expressing pride in the Association’s accomplishments, the Governor shared that it has been recognized as the best NGO in the country among 4,500 senior citizen associations. He described its work for the weaker sections of society as exemplary.
During the program, the Governor felicitated several senior citizens over the age of 90, who continue to lead healthy and active lives. He congratulated the awardees and applauded their service to society.
The Governor also appealed to the younger generation to show greater respect, love, and care for the elderly. He stressed that it is the collective responsibility of society to ensure that senior citizens do not face loneliness amidst changing social dynamics.
Concluding the program, the Governor extended his best wishes to all senior citizens, wishing them good health and happiness. He urged everyone to work together to build a society where the elderly can live with dignity and peace.
