PGIMER’s Deptt. of Gastroenterology inaugurated our new Advanced Endoscopy Centre and Advanced Fluoroscopy Centre with Endoscopy Disinfection Unit

An ‘advanced endoscopy center was inaugurated in the department of Gastroenterology PGIMER here today by Dr. D.N Reddy, Padma Bhushan.

Prof Jagat Ram, Director PGI presided over the function which was attended by the previous director Prof YK Chawla and Prof Kartar Singh, former head of the department. Dr. Ajay Kumar Chairman Dr. B L Kapoor Hospital New Delhi was the guest of honor.

Prof Usha Dutta the head of the department informed that the new center has state of art equipment for advanced complex endoscopy procedures and a new image C-arm fluoroscopy unit besides Spy Glass Cholangioscopy equipment . The centre will give a major boost to the new domain of third space endoscopy which includes procedures like per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). Another addition to the department is a new Automated Disinfection Unit for sterilizing endoscopes to overcome the risk of transmission of infection. She said that the new center will help in patient-centric care and doctor-centric training benefitting both.

Dr DN Reddy delivered the first PGI Gastroenterology Oration. He recounted his journey in endoscopy from his two years of training in PGI to becoming a leading expert in endoscopy worldwide. He appreciated the values he imbibed at PGI which helped him in his illustrious career. He gave an inspiring talk on how he developed endoscopy skills at different centers of the world and how the current generation of trainees could emulate him.

Earlier Dr Rakesh Kochhar former head of the department gave details about the history of the department since its inception as a division of the Department of Medicine in 1967, to its special status as a super specialty department recognized for its services in India and internationally. He informed that over 270 specialists have got their DM training since 1959 when the DM program had started. The session was live-relayed to the PGI Gastro alumni of the department.
