85-year-old woman regains mobility after complex hip revision surgery
Chandigarh: Chandigarh: An 85-year-old woman, who was bedridden for 3.5 years regained mobility after a complex hip revision surgery at Max Hospital Mohali
. A team of doctors, led by Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Director Orthopedics & Joint Replacement, Max Super Speciality Hospital, helped the woman regain her mobility.
The patient was brought to Max in a critical condition with severe complications due to a failed hip surgery. Considering the severity of her injury, the doctors led by Dr. Sandeep Gupta, director orthopedics & joint replacement counselled a two-stage procedure as the solution.
The patient initially underwent a hemiarthroplasty (partial hip replacement) several years ago at another facility, but the surgery failed, leading to a deep infection and bone erosion caused by the implant. These complications rendered her bedridden and in constant pain, significantly impacting her quality of life.
She was in a painful condition with severe bone damage and an ongoing deep infection, making her unable to walk.
In her surgery at Max , two stages were involved. The first stage involved the removal of the infected implant and a thorough cleaning of the infection site, followed by the placement of a specialized antibiotic spacer to eradicate infection. Once the infection was fully resolved, the second stage was performed, wherein a new customized implant was fitted to restore hip function, said Dr. Sandeep Gupta.
He further said,” The patient had severe bone damage and infection, making this one of the most complex revision hip replacement surgeries we’ve undertaken. After careful evaluation, we decided on a two-stage procedure to ensure optimal recovery.”
Dr. Gupta also emphasised the importance of seeking timely expert care for failed joint replacements.
The surgery was a success, and the patient is now walking independently and has resumed back in her daily activities with ease.
