All Preparations Complete for Panjab University’s 72nd Convocation

Chandigarh, 11 March 2025 –

All preparations for the 72nd Convocation of Panjab University (PU), scheduled for 12 March 2025, have been completed. The Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will preside over the prestigious event and deliver the Convocation address at the University. PU holds 601-800 rank in 2024 ‘THE World University Ranking’, 1001-1200 rank in 2024 QS World Ranking, an A++ NAAC Grading, and 25th NIRF Ranking in 2023 among Indian universities.

Smt. Droupadi Murmu will be the sixth President of India to address the Panjab University Convocation. Sh. Pranab Mukherjee (2015), Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam (2007), Giani Zail Singh (1985), Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy (1981), and Dr. Rajendra Prasad (1951) had earlier addressed the PU Convocation.

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, PU Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma, Controller of Examinations Prof. Jagat Bhushan, Finance and Development Officer Sh. Vikram Nayyar, Director of the Computer Centre Prof. Anu Gupta, and Director of Public Relations Dr. Vineet Punia today released Panjab University’s official YouTube channel – @Panjab.University. PU is already available on Facebook, Instagram, and X. The university convocation will be streamed live on PU’s official YouTube channel and Facebook page.

Earlier, PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig reviewed the preparations. A rehearsal of the convocation was also held, wherein the students participated with great enthusiasm.

As part of the PU Convocation, Panjab University, Chandigarh, has declared 12 March 2025 as a holiday for all teaching and non-teaching departments and offices on the university campus.

As part of the prestigious event, renowned mathematician Dr. R.J. Hans-Gill and social worker Sushri Nivedita Raghunath Bhide will be conferred honorary degrees by the President of India. Dr. R.J. Hans-Gill will receive the Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa), while Sushri Nivedita Raghunath Bhide will be awarded the Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa).

Additionally, several distinguished personalities will be honoured for their significant contributions in their respective fields. Dr. Gurtej Singh Sandhu will receive the Vigyan Ratna, Dr. Harmohinder Singh Bedi will be awarded the Sahitya Ratna, Dr. Pushvinder Jit Singh will be conferred the Udyog Ratna, Ms. Manu Bhaker will be honoured with the Khel Ratna, and Dr. Jaspinder Narula will receive the Kala Ratna.

Sushri Nivedita Raghunath Bhide and Dr. Gurtej Singh Sandhu arrived today at the campus. Sushri Nivedita Raghunath Bhide, a Padma Shri awardee, has dedicated her life to social service and the promotion of Indian culture. She has authored numerous books and has been an influential voice in national and international forums. Dr. Gurtej Singh Sandhu, a globally renowned semiconductor innovator with 1,382 U.S. patents, has played a pivotal role in advancing memory chip technology. As Vice President at Micron Technology, he continues to drive innovation in AI, semiconductor fabrication, and nanotechnology.

During the convocation ceremony tomorrow, 812 Ph.D. students and 70 medal-winning students of Panjab University will receive their degrees and awards, respectively. Out of 945 Ph.D. students eligible to receive their degrees, 812 confirmed their attendance today, comprising 195 male and 617 female candidates. Among 92 medalists, 70 were present today, including 8 male and 62 female students.

Among the academic prize recipients, Sukhjot Kaur will be awarded the Abhishek Sethi Memorial Cash Prize of Rs. 30,000 for her outstanding achievements in B.E. Computer Science and Engineering. Furthermore, Dr. Balwinder Raj and Dr. Munish Kumar will each receive the Shiv Nath Rai Kohli Memorial Mid-Career Best Scientist Award-2023, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 50,000.
